What’s the crack with same day delivery?

Same day delivery was introduced to the online retail industry in 2001 by the owner of Flowers24Hours.co.uk, based in London. With his online site, he found he could accommodate those last minute gift people by allowing them to place an order up until 5PM for same day delivery. The floral industry was quick to catch on the trend, delivering gifts for people on the same day. This innovation shaped the floral industry. Never again would people have to worry about forgetting someone’s birthday, or leaving it to last minute.

‘Gift delivered today’ and ‘same day delivery’ quickly became a highly sought after keyword on Google, with many florists offering the service. But why hasn’t this taken off in other retail sectors? Simply, the cost of delivery for a same day item can be astronomical. Most retailers use a third party delivery service, such as FedEx or Royal Mail to deliver their products. Florists, on the other hand, already have a network of their own delivery drivers, because of the fragile and short life span of the flowers they’re delivering. This allows florists to be able to reach huge areas quickly. If they have vans going across London anyway, another order coming in on the day doesn’t make a difference.

Other industries are beginning to catch up, despite a reasonably slow response. Clothing retailer ASOS recently launched a same day delivery service. Ticket or voucher based services can also offer last minute gifts by displaying their vouchers in a PDF format which the recipient or sender can print off manually. Not quite the same, but tickets are generally loaded with more experiences.
